I have a chapter entitled, “Seeing and Believing: Film Theory as a Window into a Visual Faith” in a new book just published by Baker Academic. I talk about the movie Garden State as an example of the iconic power of film. Reframing Theology and Film: New Focus for an Emerging Discipline is edited by my colleague at Fuller Seminary, Robert Johnston. It represents the fruit of a two year consultation sponsored by the Henry Luce Foundation that brought together leading scholars in Theology and Film from around the world.
The book challenges readers to move theology and film beyond a literary paradigm to incorporate more visual and musical appreciation. It also includes the insights from sociology, philosophy and church history. Contributors include Barry Taylor, Gaye Ortiz, Sara Anson Vaux, Gordon Lynch, Terry Lindvall, Clive Marsh, Rebecca Ver Straten-McSparran, Catherine M. Barsotti, John Lyden, Mitch Avile, Christopher Deacy, Rose Pacatte, FSP, Gerard Loughlin and Robert K. Johnston.
Reframing Theology and Film will also be featured as the theme of a session at the 2007 American Academy of Religion conference in San Diego on Tuesday, November 20th at 9am. Terry Lindvall will moderate the presentations by Gaye Ortiz, John Lyden, S. Brent Plate and me. Rob Johnston will conclude the session with a summary response. If you’d like to be immersed in a high brow, theological and artistic bath, then come on down…

I wish I would have known about this earlier! Garden State is one of my favorite movies and it’s emotionally stirring on several levels.
